   Dr.Ragini Hashmukhrai Parekh is a renowned eye surgeon, recognised both for her mastery of sophisticated techniques in eye surgery and for her community work in ophthalmology in rural and tribal areas of Maharashtra. Hhe has performed more than 35,000 cataract surgeries successfully and treated more than 5 lakh patients so far.

 

Born in 1967 as a Buisnessmans daughter, she graduated in the field of Medicine from Mumbai University, Mumbai in 1990. She obtained her surgical training and passed the Master of Surgery degree in Ophthalmology from the same University in 1993.As she was born with golden Spoon in the mouth all the avenues to practice were open to her. However, her devotion and concerned to poor patients continued her to work in Government hospital. Though she was never expirienced to rural Maharashtra, she started working devotedly in rural and tribal eye camps. She has travelled every corner of Maharashtra for treating the poor patients. From 13 years, she is working tirelessly for upliftment of Department of ophthalmology of Sir J. J. Hospital. She works 16 hours a day. Being concerned for poor patients to offer them more time, she has closed down her private practice. We have heard Govt. docters practicing but Dr. ragini is only exception that she has left practice for needy patients care.  She is expirienced in performing state of art surgeries like phacoemulsification, sutureless cataract surgery, keratoplasty, all types of lasers, paediatric surgery and cancer surgery, totally free for poor patients.

 

Dr. Ragini's contribution also includes camp activities in community ophthalmology, which are not part of her duties, in the Medical College but done as social work, in her off duty time. She is performing advanced phacoemulsification and stitch-less surgeries in eye camps in rural Maharashtra.  She has conducted 120 such camps, all over Maharastra including 46 camps in tribal areas. She visits every patient's minimum seven times. She is very much concerned with visual out come of each and every patient. Operated 249 Small Incision Cataract Surgeries in Three days, which is world Record in December 2005.She has performed 267 Suture less Cataract surgeries in three days in December 2006 (yet to establish world record). She Performed 286 surgeries in 3 days, crossed her own record, and 110 sutureless surgeries in 10 hours (a new record)

.

 She has conducted live surgical workshops and Instruction courses in advanced surgical techniques all over India. She has more than 100 presentations in National Conferences. Through public lectures, newspaper articles and electronic media he has campaigned to create awareness for Eye Donation.  She is scientific committee chairperson of the Bombay Ophthalmologists' Association.

 

Dr Ragini has received numerous awards for her contributions to scientific knowledge and for her vast social work. These include "Best Lecturer Award", "Best Associate Professor","Giant's International Award", "Shatayushi Purashke", "Samaj Gourav Purashkar", Jain Smaj Purashkr "," Rotary Purashkar and so many other awrds.
